Signatures on the Land

Rides at the Door was born and raised on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, where she developed her connection with and care for the land. Roylene Rides at the Door is the Washington State Conservationist for the National Resources Conservation Service, where she has served for 22 years, and is passionate about educating the public about their crucial role in developing a sustainable relationship with their environment.

Rides at the Door will be talking about the tools that are available to help sustain the legacy of conservation we have at Ebey's Reserve – for generations to come.

  The Jacob Ebey House Experience— View a documentary featuring vignettes from local multi-generational voices that have experienced a connection with the historical Jacob Ebey House and its environment.

  From Front Street to Farmers Fields - Ebey's Reserve as an Economic Asset— Join a panel discussion about the crucial role tourism and the community play in supporting the economic viability of Ebey's Reserve. Explore pros and cons of tourism and its contribution to Whidbey Island's monetary backbone.

  From Canoes to Cars - History of Island Travel— Learn about Whidbey's historic travel routes - from Native canoes to pioneer maritime travel and highways - and the imprints they have left, not only on the land, but through the stories they continue to tell.
Host: Northwest Heritage Resources
  Saving Unprotected Landscapes— Although there is seemingly endless scenic beauty to enjoy, our work is not finished. This session will focus on unprotected heritage landscapes still remaining on Ebey's Reserve, and what can be done to help preserve the Reserve's rural character for the future.

Stories of Admiralty Head Lighthouse— Take a family field trip to the Admiralty Head Lighthouse and enjoy an exciting weaving together of lighthouse themes and stories along with a tour - from a children's storytelling musician!

12:00 - 1:15 Lunch— Enjoy a locally grown lunch in the mess hall ($12).
1:30 - 4:00 Saturday Afternoon Field Trips
  Trails & Geology of Ebey's Reserve— Provide input into the newly drafted plan for an integrated trail system on Ebey's Reserve. Hike along a proposed future trail where a geologist expert will explore how the stunning landscape has not only changed, but also remained the same.

  Taste of Ebey's - Featuring Rockwell Beans— Join local chefs, food experts, and farmers in an entertaining, cook- off challenge as we discover and celebrate this heirloom legume. Discover tasty ways to prepare and grow the all-time prairie favorite.
Hosts: Northwest Agricultural Buisness Center, Whidbey Island Grown
  The Lovejoy Files - Exploring & Preserving the Past— Tour the extensive Lovejoy Family collection, while museum and NPS archivists educate about preserving historic documents and photos. Next, enjoy a guided walking tour of classic Victorian structures built by the Lovejoy family in Coupeville.

  Ebey's Forever Fund Project Tour— Take a guided tour from expert preservationists viewing select heritage buildings that have been recently stabilized and restored. Observe how the Ebey's Forever Fund is sustaining the historical integrity and future use of the Reserve's buildings.

Ladybug Down on the Farm - Trolley Ride through Ebey's Farmland— Grab the family and take a ride on the historic Reuble trolley through Ebey's most scenic farmland, while learning about life working on a farm. Handpick pumpkins and make a fall centerpiece for your family table.
Host: Pioneer Farms and Coupeville Boys and Girls Club
4:00 - 5:00 Ebey's Reserve Farmers Market & Closing Pie Social— Bite into prairie-made pie, chat with friends old and new. Peruse and purchase homegrown Ebey's Reserve food and products, showcasing our acclaimed local farmers.
